United were forced to withdraw Wayne Rooney at the interval after he hurt his foot following a challenge by Michael Duberry.
And for the last 17 minutes Reading were down to 10 men after substitute Dave Kitson was sent off just 37 seconds after coming on.
United's best chance was in the first half when Ryan Giggs hit the outside of a post with an angled volley.
It was ironic that United, having spent a small fortune on attacking talent this summer, finished up with defender John O'Shea, on as a substitute, playing as a makeshift centre-forward.
It didn't work, as Reading defended with discipline and whole-hearted effort.
Reading boss Steve Coppell used man-markers to effectively stifle the threat of Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo.
